Why Clone Golf Clubs Can Shave Strokes Off Your Handicap
To begin with, the chief manufacturers of clone golf clubs are fully fledged golf companies. Their own research and development departments produce club designs that are manufactured using the same materials as the big OEM's. These clubs use the same design features such as club volume, increased MOI and multi material irons, to name just a few.
The rules of golf lay down strict limits when it comes to club design. Club heads have to conform to these restrictions, otherwise they are deemed non-conforming and prohibited for use in competition play. That's not only at the top levels of the game. Bagging a non-conforming driver in your next club match could end up in a disqualification.
The top manufacturers of golf clones will submit their clubs to the game's governing bodies for approval (USPGA in the USA, R&A in Europe) same as all the big OEM's. This is an expensive undertaking and nobody making substandard knock-offs is going to invest that kind of time and money on submitting clubs, only to see them turned down.
Take titanium drivers for example. For a driver to be conforming, it has to have a volume of 460 cc maximum. It's not enough for a manufacturer to say their drivers are no bigger than 460 cc. The USPGA and the R&A have to say they aren't. If drivers do come in under the limit, they are listed on the Conforming Driver lists. If they do measure over the 460 cc limit, they are placed on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.
Quick note here. Some manufacturers of cheap knock-offs proudly proclaim their drivers are conforming by stating their clubs are not on the non-conforming lists. That simply means they haven't submitted their clubs for testing. Conforming drivers go on the conforming list. Just because a drivers is on the conforming list, that doesn't make it conforming.
Creating conforming clubs takes a lot of attention and a lot of manufacturing skill. Get the build process wrong by a fraction of a percent and the clubs could well end up being non-conforming. Volume isn't the only design element limited by the rules. With limits on club-face spring back for instance (Coefficient of Restitution) potentially influenced by even the smallest variation in face thickness, quality control is vital.
Clone golf clubs from the main companies built according to the rules of the game and will make a much smaller dent in your wallet. Manufactured from the same materials as the big OEM's and with the same (or better) shafts, these are premium clubs that will make your golf that much more satisfying. As an added benefit, many of the big companies offer custom build options on their clubs.
What you get is a set of excellent, conforming, custom built clubs that will play ever bit as good, and usually a whole lot better, than those costly off-the-rack OEM's. What you won't get is the price tag.
Not a bad deal for a set of custom golf clubs.
